Memphis isn’t playing around this summer! We’re only halfway through June, and it’s already scorching hot outside. The good news is, this heatwave won’t last forever, and once it passes, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the city. Not sure what’s happening around town? You know we’ve got you covered! Keep reading below for Dr. Kyle’s picks for fun things to do in Memphis this summer.

Alice’s Adventures at the Garden

Memphis Botanic Garden

May 10 – October 31

Join Alice and all her friends for this magical immersive art exhibit! Memphis Botanic Garden has recreated Alice’s Wonderland with larger-than-life sculptures of all your favorite characters, including The Red Queen and her chess set, the Cheshire Cat, and Alice herself. Memphis is only the second city in the US to host the Alice exhibition, which uses thousands of annual bedding plants on steel armature forms to create the themed pieces. This interactive experience will also host a number of family-friendly tea parties, story-times, and special Wonderland date nights during its time here. Every Thursday through October 31, the Botanic Garden will be open late with dog-friendly hours, delicious food truck fare, and a cash bar with curious cocktails based on Alice’s adventures. Best of all? This event will allow the Garden to distribute at least 10,000 books to school kids in our community with help from local sponsors!

Hot Air Balloon Jamboree

Shelby Farms Park

June 17-19

Talk about a summer glow-up! This family-friendly weekend event features an early morning balloon launch, tethered rides in the afternoon, and an evening balloon glow with over 20 balloons. If your family are early risers, the morning balloon launch will be well worth your time. There’s something special about seeing so many balloons rise into the sky as the sun is coming up, and it makes for a fantastic photo opportunity, too! For the adventurous among you, tethered rides will be available for passengers of all ages for a bird’s eye view of the festival grounds (just be aware that these tickets are sold separately at the event.) There’s plenty to check out while you’re waiting for the balloon glow, from a Ferris wheel and other carnival activities to food trucks and live music. You’ll also be able to browse booths dedicated to local arts and crafts.

They’ll have drinks and snacks available as you kick back, relax, and watch the sun go down.

Sugar Ghost

2615 Broad Avenue

Memphis, TN 38112

From its humble food truck beginning, Sugar Ghost has grown into a full-fledged shop on Broad Avenue! When the owner of the Falling Into Place gift shop saw a need for a family-friendly drop-in on the street, she bought the space next door and made it happen. This sweet little spot has the cutest logo in Memphis and a small but mighty menu featuring bubble tea and ice cream. Their current milk tea flavors include coconut, honeydew, and chocolate, while their refreshing fruit teas are available in mango, strawberry, lychee, peach, passion fruit, and winter melon. Make it your own with popping pearls, lychee jelly, or traditional boba toppings! Sugar Ghost also makes its own ice cream in-house daily and comes in a variety of dreamy flavors like coffee cookie butter, dragon fruit sorbet, and salted caramel. They even have vegan options!
