SCO Gives Thanks!

By: Dr. Kyle Fagala, DDS, MDS

Dr. Kyle Fagala | Memphis Braces

Thanksgiving is tomorrow! We're more than ready for a day of delicious food, good fellowship, and all-day football. We'd be lying if we said we aren't already daydreaming about turkey and pumpkin pie - all those leftovers, too. But more than the menu, SCO loves Thanksgiving for the opportunity it gives us to slow down and count our blessings.

It can be easy to lose sight of the day-to-day goodness we experience in our lives in the hustle-and-bustle of work, school, church, and extracurricular activities. Little moments of beauty get lost in all the scheduling, planning, and carpooling. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to practice gratitude for all the sweet stuff life has to offer.

Now, we know 2016 has been a rough year. It seems like every time we turn around, there's more bad news to process! It's definitely been more difficult than usual to focus on the positive when there's been such an overwhelming amount of negative. That's why, in an effort to help us find the happy in this holiday season, we put together a list of some of our favorite feel-good gifs. Because who doesn't love a good gif?!

Thanksgifing 2016

1. Here is a cat hugging its human. Be it cat, puppy, or person, we recommend you hug someone you love this week, too. It's good for the soul!

2. Here is a tiny dog teaching us that perception really is everything.

3. Here are a kitten and a bunny to remind us that sometimes unexpected friendships are the best friendships.

4. Here are a mother and baby polar bear snuggling. You're never too old for snuggles from your mom. Don't let anybody tell you any different.

5. Here's a pair of dogs on a treadmill because eight legs are better than four. #teamwork

6. Here is a duck who is quietly chuckling to himself. Laughter may not always be the best medicine, but it's always good medicine, right?!

7. Here is an adorable baby who is too tired to function. Sleep is important! Get more of it!

8. Here is another adorable baby, this one sharing his bread with his cat. Sharing is caring!

9. Here is actress Aubrey Plaza taking us to church. We all love turkey, but there's no denying pizza is the universal food of love.

10. Here is Mr. Wilson, of Dennis the Menace fame, reminding us how important it is to have a healthy hygiene routine for your mouth....and to also never let the neighbor's kid near your dentures.

What We're Thankful For

Here at SCO we have an abundance of blessings to be thankful for this year. We asked our amazing team to share what they're most grateful for.

sco ortho braces memphis invisalign teens thanksgiving

You know what else we're thankful for? You! Without you, we wouldn't be able to do what we love every day when we come to work. You've entrusted your beautiful smile to our staff, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your family, not just during the holiday season, but all year long! It's our goal for you to know how valued you are every time you walk through the door.

Wherever you may find yourself sitting down for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, we hope your day is full of love, laughter, and warmth. Don't forget to practice the basics of care for your braces and Invisalign in the middle of all your feasting! You can always get in touch with us if you have questions or need any assistance.

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all! If you're feeling especially thankful for something this year, we'd love to hear all about it in the comments below!

Debunking the Top 10 Breast Cancer Myths

By: Dr. Kyle Fagala, DDS, MDS

Dr. Kyle Fagala | Memphis Braces

Anyone who follows us knows that most of our blogs are dedicated to healthy teeth and beautiful smiles, because that’s what we’re all about here at Saddle Creek Orthodontics! We love to talk about all the benefits of Invisalign and braces for teens in Memphis, Germantown, and Collierville. But, during the month of October, we’d like to take a little time off from teeth to focus on another topic that is near and dear to our hearts - breast cancer awareness.

Did you know that around 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop some form of invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime? For women in the U.S., the breast cancer death rates are higher than those for almost any other cancer. In fact, over 40,000 women in the U.S. are expected to die from breast cancer in 2016 alone. These are pretty sobering statistics.

Almost every one of us has been affected by breast cancer in some way. We've seen our mothers, sisters, daughters, and aunts diagnosed. We've watched co-workers, neighbors, members of our congregations and softball teams fight against it. Some of us have even had to travel this road ourselves.  It's no wonder that "think pink" has taken off in such a major way in recent years as this disease has touched the lives of so many people.

memphis braces invisalign collierville germnatown ortho think pink

The good news is that the death rates from breast cancer have been dropping since about the late 1980's, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of breast cancer being found earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as better treatment options.

However, there's still a lot of unfortunate misinformation surrounding breast cancer. This can sometimes lead to fear and a hesitation to seek medical advice and treatment.

As part of our effort to help increase breast cancer awareness, here are 10 common breast cancer myths we'd like to debunk!

1. Breast cancer is a death sentence

Now more than ever, the vast majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer display no signs of the cancer spreading beyond the breast and lymph nodes. About 80 percent of women diagnosed today live at least five years, and most will live much longer.

2. You don't need a mammogram before age 50

Most medical professionals recommend that women have annual mammogram screenings starting at age 40, or earlier if the woman has a higher risk of breast cancer. Mammograms are the single best screening tool available for the early detection of breast cancer.

3. Only people with a family history are diagnosed

A family history of breast cancer does increase your risk factor for developing it yourself, but every woman has some risk of developing the disease.  About 80 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have had no family history of the disease.

4. It's your fault

Lifestyle factors might play a role in risk, but currently, no one knows exactly what causes breast cancer. Some experts believe that you can develop breast cancer from eating too much fat or not exercising enough, but both perfectly healthy people and people with high-fat, sedentary lifestyles are diagnosed every day.

5. All treatments are the same

Treatment plans will vary from patient to patient. Options for treatment will depend on the type of cancer they have, the size of the tumor, the age of the patient, and their stage in the disease.  Some women will need surgery, radiation, and months of chemotherapy. Others may only require surgery or a chemo regimen.

6. Breast cancer is one, single disease

The broadest categories of breast cancer are invasive and non-invasive, but then there are several types and subtypes that depend on multiple factors. The one, and sometimes only, thing they have in common is that they all develop in the breast. Myths like this are why breast cancer awareness and education are so important!

7. A mastectomy will be necessary

Many of us jump to this conclusion when we learn of a breast cancer diagnosis, but a mastectomy isn't always necessary or even preferred. For women with breast cancer at just one site, with a tumor smaller than 4 centimeters, and clean margins achieved during surgery, a lumpectomy with radiation has been proven to be just as effective as a mastectomy.

8. Removing lymph nodes will cause discomfort and swelling

It's true that lymph node surgery can lead to discomfort, numbness, and swelling.  However, proper care of the arm along with physical therapy will usually help alleviate or even avoid these symptoms.

9. Using deodorant causes breast cancer

Despite multiple studies, there is no conclusive evidence that antiperspirants influence your risk of developing breast cancer.

10. Surgery causes cancer to spread

Cancer that has already spread to other parts of the body can be silent for some time before it is discovered.  No evidence currently exists that supports the idea that surgery causes cancer to spread.

How we're helping this October

Thanks to breast cancer awareness organizations like Susan G. Komen, there have been dramatic improvements in cancer research, treatment, and early detection in recent years. In fact, Susan G. Komen is the ONLY organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts. memphis braces invisalign saddlecreek ortho germantown collierville think pink

The Komen foundation does a great deal of research, while working to improve community health and participating in global outreach. They also put into place public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact possible against breast cancer.

For all these reasons and more, our team here at Saddle Creek Orthodontics have chosen to think pink this October to raise funds for more breast cancer awareness and research. But we need your help to help us make a big impact!

What you can do to help

It couldn't be easier! Simply ask for pink ties or elastic chain at your next appointment and take a selfie at the office. Then check-in on Facebook or Instagram, post the photo, and tag it with #EmbracePink. For every selfie posted by a patient, Dr. Kyle will donate $5 to the Memphis Susan G. Komen foundation, which is located right here in Germantown, TN.

What's memphis braces invisalign germantown collierville saddlecreek ortho think pinkthe best part, besides looking cute and raising money for breast cancer awareness and research?

If we reach our goal of $1000 donated, Dr. Kyle will wear a PINK TUTU to the office ALL WEEK!

Although straight smiles and healthy teeth are our passion, we want all the women in our lives to know that we stand behind them and support the efforts to eradicate this disease. Help our Collierville and Germantown offices make a difference by thinking pink the next time we see you!

Braces & Invisalign School Survival Guide

By: Dr. Kyle Fagala, DDS, MDS

Dr. Kyle Fagala | Memphis Braces

We're about a month into the 2016 school year, but be honest - you're still a *little* excited to be back, right? New friends, Friday night football, and just the slightest hint of Fall in the air (emphasis on slightest since it's still 90 degrees outside here in Memphis). You've grown accustomed to waking up at 6 in the morning, you've aced your first round of tests, you've learned how to balance 2 sports and 3 extracurriculars, and hopefully, in midst of all of this busyness - you haven't forgotten to take care of your braces or Invisalign! Here’s what you’ll need to keep your teeth on the honor roll:

1. Your Phone

germantown collierville orthodontics

In case of an orthodontic emergency, having our number stored in your contacts can cut down on the stress you’re feeling in the moment. Most of the time, you’ll be able to wait until you're able to come in for a follow-up appointment, but we can also help you over the phone. Sometimes, school nurses can help if you need to be seen quickly.

Your phone’s camera is good for more than cute selfies, too! If you can take a photo of the problem, using flash, it will help us identify the issue much more quickly and accurately.

2. Orthodontic Wax or Gishy Goo

germantown collierville orthodontics

Gishy Goo is a silicone-based product that acts like orthodontic wax. Both of these are great quick, temporary fixes for several common appliance issues, such as protruding wires, loose brackets, and mouth irritation.

3. Emergency Care Locker Kit

germantown collierville orthodontics

Did you know you can fix many appliance issues yourself with just a few everyday tools? Things like:

Mouth Irritation: If a bracket or wire is loose and causing irritation or pain to your lips or cheeks, you can slap some wax on it! Make sure that the bracket or wire is very dry first, then pinch off a pea-sized piece of wax, roll into a ball, and flatten it. Place this over the area causing irritation.

Protruding Wires: If a loose wire is irritating the inside of your mouth, pop open that pencil case! You can use the eraser end of a #2 pencil to gently nudge the wire back into place flat against the teeth until your next appointment. Place a piece of wax over the wire to prevent irritation and add some stability.

Loose Bracket(s): We definitely need to know if a bracket comes loose! We’ll be able to help you take the best next step for your situation. In the meantime, you can place wax over the loose bracket to provide a little stability, or you can slide the bracket back along the wire to the center of the tooth.

4. Basics Bag

germantown collierville orthodontics

Keep a small bag with toothpaste, an orthodontic toothbrush, and floss in your locker, and try your best to brush after lunch. It’s strongly recommended that all patients wearing braces brush and floss after every meal and snack. It’s a small step that can have a BIG impact on your orthodontic outcome.

5. Retainer or Invisalign case

germantown collierville orthodontics

It’s kind of a cliche’, but a lot of retainers really DO end up in the cafeteria trash, forgotten in a wadded up napkin. Keep your case on hand and you can avoid having to decide between digging through the garbage or telling your parents you lost your retainer (again)! That said, a lost retainer can be an emergency, so call us if it happens, and we’ll let you know if you need to head to a local office to have impressions made.

Remember that you can always call on us here at Saddle Creek Orthodontics for help, and you should definitely do so if you’re in pain or if you have questions. We can be reached at both our Collierville and Germantown offices by calling (901) 726-3878.

May your teachers be nice and your homework load light!

Wardrobe Must-Haves for Any Style!

As we dive into September, fall is always on our minds. From counting down the days until #PSL season to unabashedly burning Macintosh apple candles 24/7, the promise of autumn is always welcomed! I have to admit, though, that almost nothing gets us more excited than New York Fashion Week. What’s on the style horizon? What beauty trends will we anticipate? I'm a fashion nerd with no shame!

Shelbi Andrews at Saddle Creek Orthodontics | Orthodontic Treatment Coordinator Hi, everyone; it's me, Shelbi! In honor of this year’s NYFW, I've commandeered the Memphis Braces blog to share our wardrobe must-haves for any style. Not that I'm implying anything about Dr. Kyle’s style, but he didn’t know what #ootd meant until a few weeks ago! ūüėČ

Making it a point to get these pieces in your closet will mean that you always have something to wear and can always look put-together with effortless style. But don’t get it twisted; it’s all comfy, too (Minus maybe those Jimmy Choos!).

Tops

You need the most volume and variety when it comes to tops, as bottoms and outerwear tend to act as bases for these pieces. Wardrobe Must-Haves for Any Style! | Braces Fashion | Orthodontics and FashionI've picked versatile tees, shirts, and tanks that work well both dressed down with comfy kicks and ripped jeans, as well as paired with more formal pieces like a pencil skirt and ankle-strap pumps for a client meeting. Don’t be afraid to invest here; a high-quality white tee is worth several cheap ones.

Coats & Jackets

Who can argue with the timelessness of a great trench coat? Next to it, hang up a wool coat, cardigan, comfy open cardigan, blazer, utility jacket (Loving these so much!), leather jacket, and denim jacket for versatility and style that fits every mood and any weather report. Try pairing that leather jacket with more feminine pieces for an edgier look that’s not too rocker chick… just the right amount!

Bottoms

The LBD, a pencil skirt, black pants, and two pairs of skinny jeans? I'm pretty sure this category is self-explanatory. You know how versatile these pieces are, but make sure you invest in good-quality pieces that fit you well. You’ll be wearing them a lot, so you might as well get pieces that make you look and feel your best!

Shoes & Accessories

We all dream of that shoe closet from the Sex & the City movie, don’t we? But you don’t need 100 square feet of storage space for these must-haves. Find a pair of casual sneakers or tennis shoes that fit your style and pair them with comfy yet elegant flats, booties, and classic pumps for a rotation that fits any occasion. The handbag is another investment piece--you take it everywhere. So, get something you love that really speaks your style! Top it all off with a pair of sunglasses in a flattering shape for your face. This isn’t a time to order online! Go to the store and try on as many pairs as it takes to find “the one” that hits you. Trust us, when you put on the pair, you’ll know!

1000-Watt Smile

You could dress head-to-toe in Derek Lam, but without a brilliant smile, your look is not complete. Did you know that 50% of people say the first thing they notice about someone is their smile1? Not the Kate Spade handbag, not the Alexander Wang skinny jeans, not the Rag & Bone tailored blazer… their smile! Thanks to modern orthodontics, there are many ways to straighten your grin into the smile of your dreams. From virtually invisible Invisalign to traditional metal braces, braces on the inside of your teeth to ceramic, tooth-colored braces (like I had!), there’s a treatment that will fit your life and your needs. It’s time to get that Saddle Creek Orthodontics designer smile!

Call us at 901-726-3878 or contact our office to set up your free consultation.
OK... I'm going to give Dr. Kyle his blog back now!
